This is my first website... What do I need?

You may be starting up a new business or you may be an existing company.  You may have some idea of what you would need, on the other hand, you might not know at all.  The best thing to do is email or phone with any information that you have about your business, and what level you are looking to take your business to.

I do not know much about web design...

You don't have to worry about that.  If you have a basic idea of how you would like your website to be put together, then you can use anything you like to demonstrate your ideas: written copy, photoshop mock-up, even a pencil drawing!
There is no need to make your idea too precise, as anything that is too complex makes it harder for users to browse your website. A few key features i.e. how many pages, what should be on those pages, colour scheme etc is more than enough information to kick-start a project.

I like their website and I would like something similar...

It is always a good idea to have a look at websites from your direct competitors. Pin-point what you think does and does not work well on their website.
Alternatively, Nishmedia can cover the research part of the project for you. Provide me with a list of companies, and their marketing material will be researched for you.

I need a really simple business card page...

A single page website will have the same level of care and attention devoted to it as larger sites.  This is fairly simple and can normally be turned around in 24 hours (1-3 days if you also require a domain name to be registered). Three designs will be put together for you for you to choose. You could also take elements from each design and put it into one. It is totally up to you.

I need to sell my product online...

E-commerce businesses have popped up by the thousand in the last few years.  You may have a great product and would like to sell it yourself, online, through your own website. Fix your own prices and avoid paying out to the middle men.  You will be able to manage your own e-commerce website.
If you still like to take your orders via the phone or printed order forms and would like to avoid taking payments online, then the payment facility can be switched on and of via a few clicks, switching your website from shop to a plain and simple catalogue. 

It is also possible to add a shopping cart facility to an existing website.

Manage your website yourself?

No problem at all.  I use a Content Management System (CMS) which enables the user to update any content and graphics via the administration area, sometimes referred to as 'back-end', of the website. The part of websites that the public sees is called the 'front-end'.

I would like some sound and animation on my site...

Easy. You will generally find that it is websites that are related to the design/arts/music industries that tend to have their sites built with a program called FLASH. FLASH is used to create a rich and dynamic user experience. Often it is used when an individual or company is simply wanting to show what they are all about and do not need to necessarily market themselves to prospective clients online. It is difficult to get a FLASH website ranking high in the search engines due to the way that they are constructed.
